ITINERARY
Day 1: Drive to Tastayoc and commence the trek
Today we drive from the Sacred Valley towards Malaga Pass (4900mts) - this is one of the most spectacular roads in Peru as it winds up from the Sacred valley to the divide between the high Andes and the rainforest to the east. Before reaching the pass we stop at Tastayoc (3990m) where we meet our camp crew, who will be waiting for us with lunch ready. After lunch we start ascending towards Yuraqrumiyoc Pass (4670m). After a couple of hours we stop at our first campsite (4400m approx) below the first pass. Total time walking is approx. 3 to 4 hours.
Day 2: Trek from Yuraqrumi to above azul cocha
Today we walk up to the pass (4672m) and start the descent into the choquecancha valley. From here we follow the valley up to the next pass Azul cocha (4357m) and then descend to our campsite near the village of choquecancha. The scenery along the way is spectacular with great views of the surrounding snowed peaks as well as the chance to see lots of water fowls like, Andean geese, Puna Ibis and Andean Lapwing among others.
Day 3: Rest day at CHOQUECANCHA
Today we spend the day visiting this medieval village of potato farmers and skilled traditional weavers. It is also a village where Explore Adventures has worked for many years on various community projects. Today we also take part in a traditional 'pachamanca' - a wonderful Andean Andean 'feast' that is simple but tasty. It involves cooking cheeses, meats and potatoes and other tuber in hot rocks under the ground and then is shared with all villagers!
Day 4 Choquecancha , Pumamarca Machupicchu
After breakfast, you will spend the morning descending to the Inca citadel of Pumamarka. These rarely visited ruins are perched high over the village of Pallacta with stunning views. After lunch below the ruins, you will go by vehicle to the town of Ollantaytambo and board your train to Aguas Calientes (6,230 ft), located at the base of Machu Picchu, where your hotel awaits you.
Day 5 Machupicchu
Uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu during an early morning tour of this Incan citadel. You'll visit the most important parts of the ruins to learn how and why they were constructed. After the tour, you'll have time to further explore the ruins or sit back and enjoy the magic of Machu Picchu. Departing from Machu Picchu town, enjoy a train ride to Cuzco.
